In this Denver, Colorado home, a charming butler's pantry off the main kitchen keeps the cooking mess out of sight from dinner guests. To lighten up the dark pantry, the above-sink shelves were replaced by a custom designed picture window to illuminate the space in natural light.

Since this window faces a busy Denver street a frosted pane was installed on the bottom portion of the window over the sink, which eliminates the need to add a room-darkening curtain.

The elegant segment radius grille at the top of the window picks up on the period design of the pantry; notice that above street level the window is made with clear glass, allowing light to stream in unfiltered. Picture window installations usually are fixed and cannot be opened, so make sure you install them in areas where air circulation is not a problem. In this space, ventilation is obtained from the adjoining airy kitchen.
